Retail Landscape is a shopping complex rejuvenation project located in Dendermonde, Belgium. The project proposes partial demolition of the existing retail structure and a reconfiguration of the otherwise disjointed and unconnected shopping warehouses into a coherent whole, elevating the shopping experience. A orderly grid of 3 by 3 is laid out with retail buildings lining the periphery. The centre is left empty as an open atrium to be activated by a myriad of events, including but not limited to weekend farmers’ bazaars, exhibitions and small concerts. This central atrium acts as the heart of the new retail complex.
Small alleyways lead from the edge of the plot into the atrium, joining this open space at each corner, creating a ‘pinwheel’ effect of circulation, drawing shoppers into this central zone. Additional retail is envisioned on the second level, with escalators in the central atrium connecting upwards.
