In 2022, Generiek was invited by the Vlaams Architectuurinstituut (VAi) to be the first in the Tafelzetting series. This was a series of exhibitions and lectures meant to showcase young architects in Belgium(in particular the Flemish region). The aim was to used an existing series of tables that were designed to be reconfigured and reinterpreted according to the offices’ grammar and intentions.

For Generiek, the project coalesced into a linear frame that serves to exhibit the office’s work on one side, but also provide a space of inhabitation and use on the other, serving as threshold and frame. This space of inhabitation takes the form of a lawn and a collage of an ideal and fantastical naturalistic landscape. This is a reflection on the research interest that Generiek has always held dear; the way of living and gthe embodied subjectivity in the Flemish territories.

The lawn plays an important role in the playing out of the suburban fantasy in Flanders, it is the public projection of a social status and success at the front of the house. It is almost akin to a double-edged sword. Flanders, while faced with crisis of the territorial landscape, from loss of biodiversity and natural forestry to decreasing space and allotments for construction, is still fundamentally beholden to the suburban dream of individual ownership.

As such, this installation both serves to exhibit the work of Generiek, but also invites audience to reflect upon this suburban reality and the subjective conditioning we have normalised while we live our daily lives in Flanders.
